What is the Gas Safe Register?

Gas Safe Register is the official gas safety organisation in Great Britain. It replaced CORGI on 1st April 2009. Gas Safe Register is responsible for the registration and regulation of gas engineers. Membership is mandatory for any company or engineer working with gas appliances. If you would like to find out more about Gas Safe Register you can call 0800 408 5500 or visit the Gas Safe Register website.

What is a condensing boiler?

A condensing boiler makes more of the energy it runs on by using heat normally expelled through the flue. By converting over 90% of the fuel used (rather than just 50% in the case of some old boilers), a condensing boiler makes your fuel go further. Therefore, a condensing boiler can help to save you money and reduce your carbon footprint.

What is a combi boiler?

Combi is short for 'combination'. It refers to the way this type of system serves as both a central heating boiler and a hot water heater. That means there's no need for a water tank as hot water is provided on demand. As well as saving the space normally taken up by a water tank (in the loft or airing cupboard), a combi boiler saves on hot water costs as well as giving you hot water at mains pressure.

Are there restrictions as to where boilers can be sited?

Generally boilers can be sited wherever you like. All they require is flueing to the outside and to meet all building regulations.

How are high-efficiency condensing boilers more efficient than standard efficiency boilers?

High-efficiency condensing boilers are able to capture and use much of the heat that old non-condensing boilers waste and release into the atmosphere.

Condensing boilers convert around 90% of fuel into useful heating, whereas old conventional boilers only convert around 60% and waste the rest. All new gas boilers in England and Wales must be condensing boilers.

Can I have a power shower?

If you have a combination boiler you will not be able to have a power shower. You will have to have a systems boiler with a cylinder of hot water for the pump to draw from. Your pressure may be increased if you are still connected to your loft water tank by disconnecting your tank and connecting your taps, boiler, and toilet to mains water pressure. This process normally only takes 2 hours.

What is a gas safety and landlord certificate?

It is a complete safety check of all your gas appliances and gas supply pipes and fittings to the premises. In addition to this we will check that there is adequate ventilation by performing tests according to GasSafe standards.
